I think it's entirely fair for the members of our review panel to say they'd never buy a bottle of mezcal that had a scorpion in it. It's a matter of personal preference and our final recommendations were reflective on what was in the glass. Also these were all tasted blind so the impact of the scorpion only came with the reveal of what we were all tasting. The reaction to that reveal was quite unpleasant to a couple of the tasters who were there...

Don't know who constituted your panel of tasters but it is odd that so many people had a negative reaction to the "scorpion" in the bottle of the Scorpion mezcal. First, If they like or don't like the mezcal on its own merits that is fine (It is a good mezcal but not my favorite by any means) and second, it is just a scorpion exoskeleton that is there primarily for "fun" because of the name. It has no impact on the taste or quality of the mezcal nor does it impose any risk to the person who consumes the mezcal. Even if it WAS a complete scorpion there is a pretty good chance the mezcal would have neutralized it! Those mezcals that have a "worm" (really the larvae of a moth that lives on the agave plant) can have some impact on the flavor. The scorpion exoskeleton does not. The reported reaction of the people tasting these mezcals only leads me to conclude they aren't someone I would put much trust in as a reviewer.

I'd like to add to this list what is probably dollar for dollar the best mezcal on the market - the San Luis del Rio, which at ~$30 is as close as I have ever gotten to the miraculous Del Maguey Tobala.

And, for Tequila...while it's spendy, the Don Julio 1942? Outstanding. And, I like 1942 even more as I do believe that they do not autoclave their piñas, but toast them in the oven as is traditional. Mmm...

[...] 1800 Tequila Silver – You might think tequila would be better suited to sipping beachside watching some volleyball than in a bitter cold football stadium, but you need to remember why you’ve grabbed that little flask in the first place – to take the edge off the bitter cold and to perhaps avoid getting fleeced by inflated stadium beverage prices. 1800 Tequila Silver is very smooth and easy to drink, guaranteed to warm you up and stick with you. It’s a fraction of the price of many other tequilas (around $30) but from a flask no one will ever know the difference.
