• Patrón Goes Green

    Patrón Goes Green

In this era of “Green is In” and corporations like Walmart ‘greenwashing’, you’d expect one of the biggest players in the tequila space to trumpet their environmental efforts on every bottle, package and press release. But Patrón is actually quite understated when it comes to their landmark environmental efforts. In an industry where terms like ‘fair trade’ and ‘environmentally conscious’ aren’t thrown around a whole lot, Patrón is making some moves that could really change all that. When you look at the numbers, the amount of waste generated from a single bottle of tequila is pretty staggering. For every liter of tequila made, there are 18 liters of liquid waste created. This doesn’t even begin to take into account all the bagasse (or fibrous waste) that comes from processing the agave plants.  Currently there are a wide variety of disposal methods for this liquid waste […]

  • Asombroso Tequila Review

    Asombroso La Rosa Reposado Tequila

It’s amazing how much growth we’re seeing in the tequila market, with expanded offerings outside the traditional Blanco, Reposado and Anejo (read our exploration of tequila and mezcal article for more information). We’re expecting to see a number of new products hit the market which take a different approach to tequila. For Asombroso, the La Rosa Reposado Tequila is a tequila aged 3 months in French oak barrels previously used for Bordeaux wine. We were eager to see how the peppery tequila notes would connect with the fruity rich Bordeaux. Bottled in hand-blown replicas of 18th-century decanter bottles, Asombroso looks distinctly different from other tequilas. The bottle is absolutely a “love it or hate it” bottle. Some of the members of our tasting panel liked the throw-back look, while others thought it looked a little like a glass sex toy. […]

  • Entourage’s Tequila Avion is Real and We Have a Review

    Tequila Avion and Entourage

In what may be the best product tie-in since the Wonka Bar and Charlie and The Chocolate Factory, Tequila Avion has transcended beyond product placement into a major plot line in the Seventh Season of HBO’s Entourage.  The show’s back story for Tequila Avion is fiction (Turtle isn’t their brand rep and Marc Cuban isn’t on the hunt to buy the company) but the tequila is very real. In the real world, Tequila Avion is based in New York City and run by Ken Austin a former Senior Vice President of Seagram’s and CMO of Marquis Jet. The tequila made its way on to Entourage because Marquis Jet CEO Kenny Dichter and Tequila Avion partner, grew up with Doug Ellin, the creator of the HBO series. Ellin reportedly didn’t charge childhood friend Dichter for using the product. Guess he was part of his […]

  • Introducing Juan Collins

    Juan Collins

The Collins is a quintessential classic cocktail that combines gin, simple syrup, lemon juice and soda. As with many classic drinks, the origin is often up for debate. The Tom Collins first appears in the 1876 edition of Jerry Thomas’ “The Bartender’s Guide ” but (according to BAR) it got its start as a way to stretch out a Gin Punch using iced soda water at the Limmer Hotel in London. The Tom Collins has been made with gin, genever gin and old tom gin throughout various points in history and in 1874 was the brunt of a national joke (known as The Great Tom Collins hoax of 1874) where people would go around asking people if they’ve seen “Tom Collins”. The drink would evolve with American whiskey standing in the place of gin and taking on the name John […]

  • 3 Amazing Tequila Drinks

    Carter Beats The Devil

Over the past few weeks we’ve been spending a lot of time with tequila and mezcal: sipping it, doing extensive tasting notes and mixing it up. All this lead to our monster piece with over 20 mezcal and tequila reviews and our Top 5 List of Mezcal and Tequila. While we love sipping good tequila and mezcal there are 3 mind blowing cocktails which we feel shows off the very best of agave based drinks. The first drink is the Margarita. Perhaps one of the most overdone drinks, the classic margarita isn’t something that looks like a slurpee from 7-11 or even really needs Cointreau to spruce it up. A perfect margarita is a beautiful expression of the agave spirit and how well it connects with citrus. Our absolute favorite maragrita recepie is perhaps the most straight forward and it comes’ from Tommy’s Margarita […]
